Goodbye Sparkle

Sparkle lies with her eyes closed

17-Nov-2021. This evening we said goodbye. We were not expecting Sparkle’s end to come so soon. She had such a good day yesterday. She was out front, in her usual spot next to her sign by the sidewalk, sitting up tall, radiant in the sunshine, waiting for any of her many friends to stop by to and say hello.

But today her tumor started bleeding again, in her mouth. We kept her indoors, looking after her all day, and hoped that the bleeding would stop as it had last time, over a week ago. At last this evening the bleeding stopped, and we felt some hope that she would again recover. But what we didn’t know was that, unseen to us, her bleeding was much more extensive this time. She had been swallowing the blood that was draining into her mouth, so we only saw a small portion of it. When we discovered what had happened, we brought her to an emergency room veterinary hospital. But it was to no avail: she had lost far too much blood, and she was rapidly weakening. Suddenly our hopes for her recovery were gone, and it was time to say goodbye.

Sparkle was sweet and loving to the very end. Thank you to her many friends and fans for giving her so much love, day after day for the past ten years. And thank you everyone else who didn’t get to meet her in person, but still sent such kind wishes these past several days.

  1. My condolences to your family. You did a kindess to Sparkle by letting her go when it was her time. Sometimes we don’t get to choose which day even if its guaranteed it will be soon, it ends up being way sooner in unforseen circumstances. My old lady was 15 and it was fast and unexpected. She is at peace now with Sparkle running around in doggy heaven 🌈 rest assured she is happy and pain free now and all she’s worried about is how you’re doing now that she’s gone. Those we love are never truly gone, they live on in our hearts and in our memories ❀️ always ❀️ love and light sent your way

  2. I am so, so sorry for your loss. I live alone and am estranged from my family and discovered your sweet girl at the start of the pandemic. She brought me such joy and peace and comfort, as I can see that she did for many. Thank you for sharing her with us. She will live on in our hearts.

  4. Sparkle’s friend Beau gave her a sniff and a wag on her final day outside. We wish her parents peace and healing in their grief.

  5. Blessings.
Sparkle, you were so kind and patient with me when I visited with you after we lost our Izzy in March 2020. Thank you for being the best Mayor that Somerville has ever had!
Thank you to your parents for sharing you with all of us. You are already missed.
You will be remembered as a Very Good Girl. The best girl.

  6. Oh, I am so very sorry for your loss and for the loss to all of us who loved seeing Sparkle out on the street. I’ll remember her for the joy she brought every time I walked by.

  7. I am so sorry for your loss. I only met Sparkle through a news report yesterday as I live in Texas, but she touched my heart deeply across the miles. We lost our special boy, Baba, to canine cancer last year during the pandemic. We also had him for 11 years. So, I know how heartbreaking this time is for your family. I wish I could have met Sparkle in person, but she touched so many lives in her special way. That is priceless. I made a donation to Mary’s Dogs in her honor. May she rest in peace. God bless you…

  8. Thank you for sharing Sparkle with us virtually. So very sorry for your loss of this sweet, true girl. I know she’ll be with you forever, but it is so hard to say goodbye.

  9. I’m so sorry to hear the news about Sparkle. I live in the area and always said hi to her on my way up Elm. She was the sweetest girl and she will be very missed.

  10. Dearest Melora and Sparkles family,
I want to say that I’m so very sorry for the loss of Sparkle. I came across her story a week prior to her passing and she truly touched my heart. You guys shared her with us all, and allowed Sparkle to be a part of our lives. Her paw prints are embedded on my heart for all of time. I hoped and prayed she had more time, and that she had full recovery as well. When I heard the devastating news I sobbed. I believe all dogs go to heaven, and Sparkle is in no more pain. She will always be with us all, and I have you to thank for that. Rest in Peace Sweet girl! I love you and I thank your mom and dad for honoring your life in such a beautiful way, by allowing you to greet so many throughout your life. You will live on in my heart forever sweet Sparkle!!!! I truly miss you and love you! 😒 My deepest condolences to Sparkle’s family! πŸ™ Much love and prayers to Sparkle’s family!
